Who Was Sir Edwin Lutyen?

Sir Edwin Lutyens made a splash in the world of architecture when after graduating from Royal College of Art, London he set up his own practice. He was quickly applauded for his distinctive style at Munstead Wood, Godalming - characterised by balanced roofs with high buttressed chimneys and contrasting window strips. This work opened doors to a brilliant series of country houses that showcased how he could merge past styles into modern domestic architecture!

In 1910, Sir Edwin Lutyens began taking on bigger projects that would shape history. His influence was instrumental in the new Indian capital of Delhi and its now famous garden-city pattern based on hexagons separated by tree lined avenues. He blended aspects of classical architecture with features from indigenous designs for his masterpiece Viceroy's House which earned him a knighthood in 1918!

Sir Edwin Lutyens had the honourable task of helping to commemorate fallen soldiers after WWI. He designed many monuments, including London's iconic Cenotaph and The Great War Stone. His last project was an ambitious effort - constructing a Roman Catholic cathedral in Liverpool which sadly remained unfinished at his death.
